Thank you mods for being kind and not just immediately banning someone. – Rakor_12

Staff are people who keep the server running. They're all volunteers and don't get any gameplay perks.

Staff Positions
Management
There are three different management positions. They can technically do anything in the server.
* Admins are responsible for the technical side of the server and supervise the developers.
* Overseers manage the community side of the server and supervise the moderators.
* Owner has the greatest power over the server.

Moderation
Moderators enforce the rules. They can see grief alerts, repair grief and ban people. New moderators are called junior moderators.

Development
Developers help admins to code custom plugins and scripts for the server.

Requirements
Moderators
* 200 hours playtime
* Age 16+ (exceptions can be made for justified reasons)
* Friendly, responsible and helpful
* Able to deal with conflict and difficult people
* Can handle and learn Minecraft commands easily
* Able to work independently and make judgements on moderating decisions according to team guidelines
* No rule breaking or other bad behavior
* Clear communication in English
* A Discord account is recommended

Developers
* 20 hours playtime
* Age 13+
* Interest in developing server plugins and scripts
* Knowledge of Java and Spigot API

Admins
* Experience as a developer
* 600 hours of playtime
* Demonstrated to be extremely trustworthy
* Knowledge of Linux shell

Overseers
* Experience as a moderator
* 600 hours of playtime
* Demonstrated to be extremely trustworthy
* Able to deal with all kinds of situations and people and work as a supervisor/teacher for moderator

Note that being part of the staff is volunteer work. There is no money or extra perks involved, and it’s not a position to seek for status either. We are looking for people who genuinely want to help and make the server run smoothly.

The workload is shared and light enough so that it’s possible to be a part of staff within normal playing hours.
How To Apply
To apply for staff, send an application to PolarTheWise on Matrix or Discord. Include in the application:
* Why do you want to join the staff
* Which role/position are you applying for
* If you fit the requirements
* What other skills do you have that are useful
* Do you have any specific ideas how to develop the server

PolarTheWise: clarifications and reorganizing some rules

You must follow these rules while playing on the server. Rule breakers will be first warned and then banned. If you are unsure about something, feel free to ask from our moderators. Please use common sense!

No griefing or stealing
Modifying other people's builds without a permission is called griefing and it's strictly prohibited here. This includes following actions:

* Breaking or placing blocks.
* Taking items from or putting items into containers (chests, barrels, furnaces, armor stands etc.).
* Killing mobs or other entities.
Terraformed areas are considered as builds. It's also possible to claim a small area using a sign. That kind of claims are no longer valid if the players becomes inactive.

Permissions
Permissions to do above things are usually given via signs.
* If you’re collaborating with someone, add a sign in the building listing your names and ”have perms for this build”.
* If you allow someone to your your chests, write the playername and ”has perms”.
* If you share a base with someone, write ”Shared base:” and playernames.

The permission signs need to be written by the person who owns the build/chests or has a permission from their owner.

Temporary permissions can be also given in chat. They will expire in 24 hours. You can also give permissions in the wiki and forum.

Also, if two players are logged in from same IP, they have full perms for each other's stuff.

Without permissions given, taking or breaking anything will be considered grief.

Other exceptions to above
* Breaking simple builds without any purpose (single blocks, temporary bridges etc.) is allowed. Ask from a moderator if unsure!
* Connecting into public infrastructure like roads is allowed.
* Crop farms can be used as long as you replant the crops same way.

No cheating
Mods and cheat clients
It's not allowed to use cheat clients or use any mods that give you an unfair advantage over other players. See below for allowed and disallowed mods.

Disallowed mods
* Mods that allows you to fly, jump higher, run faster or move through blocks etc.
* Fastbreak/fastplace
* X-ray
* Invincibility
* ESP
* Freecam
* Anything else that lets you see underground
* Auto-click that’s faster than a human or used when the player is afk

Allowed mods
* Performance improvements
* Any purely aesthetic modifications
* Minimaps (without underground)
* Inventory sorters and shortcuts
* Build aids like Litematica (for showing schematics, not for auto-placement)

Discouraged mods
* Fullbright

Other kinds of cheating
* No duping or abusing any glitches that give you an unfair advantage
* No bypassing the server afk kick

Chat rules
These rules apply to chat, signs, books, forum, Discord and this wiki.

# No bullying or personal attacks against players.
# No racism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism or any other form of discrimination or hate speech.
# No topics that are inappropriate for children. This includes nsfw, drugs etc.
# Spamming is not allowed.
# Advertising other servers is not allowed.
# Please post messages in the correct categories in the forum and Discord.
# Do not impersonate staff.
# Do not break the law.

Killing, restricted builds and other rules about builds
# Killing players outside PVP arenas is not allowed. This includes luring or teleporting players into danger.
# Traps that are designed to collect people's loot into private chests are not allowed.
# Do not build lag machines or chunk loaders.
# Do not build anything that is violent or explicit. This includes references to genocides, terrorism or wars.
# All warps have to be useful and their surroundings look nice.
# Do not revoke people's permissions to their own work without a warning.

How the rules are enforced?
I must admit I've never seen an actual server ran like this before. I don't know how this manages to hold up and work but its a miracle which makes it special. – Headcruncher1

Unlike most servers, we don't have land claims or similar protection against griefing. To keep the vanilla gameplay, we have a different approach:

* Every action is logged so moderators can check who griefed. They also get alerts about likely rule violations.
* Due to this, grief is also very quick to repair and harmful people get banned before they do any serious damage.

We have zero-tolerance for any kind of discrimination. Racial slurs will get you immediately permabanned.

Special areas
Some special areas have a little different rules:

* All kinds of builds are not allowed in the spawn. Read more here.
* Griefing is allowed in the main island of End but keep it looking nice.

You must follow these rules while playing on the server. Rule breakers will be first warned and then banned. If you are unsure about something, feel free to ask from our moderators. Please use common sense!

No griefing and stealing
Modifying other people's builds without a permission is called griefing and it's strictly prohibited here. This includes following actions:

* Breaking or placing blocks.

Chat rules
These rules apply to chat, signs, books, forum, Discord and this wiki.

# Spamming is not allowed.
# No any kind of bullying.
# No racism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism or any other form of discrimination.
# No topics that are inappropriate for children.
# Advertising other servers is not allowed.
# Please post messages in the correct categories in the forum and Discord.
# Do not impersonate staff.
# Do not break the law.

Client modifications
It's not allowed to use any mods that give you an unfair advantage over other players.

Allowed mods
* Performance improvements (like Optifine)
* Any purely aesthetic modifications
* Minimaps (without underground)
* Inventory sorters and shortcuts
* Build aids like Litematica

Disallowed mods
* Mods that allows you to fly, jump higher, run faster or move through blocks etc.
* Fastbreak/fastplace
* X-ray
* Invincibility

Disallowed mods that we can't really moderate
* Fullbright

Other rules
# No cheating. This includes disallowed mods above, but also abusing any glitches or duping.
# Bypassing the AFK check with macros or similar is not allowed.

Development
Moderators
* 200 hours playtime
* Age 16+ (exceptions can be made for justified reasons)
* Friendly, responsible and helpful
* Able to deal with conflict and difficult people
* Can handle and learn Minecraft commands easily
* Able to work independently and make judgements on moderating decisions according to team guidelines
* No rule breaking or other bad behavior
* Clear communication in English
* Able to deal with all kinds of situations and people and work as a supervisor/teacher for moderators

Note that being part of the staff is volunteer work. There is no money or extra perks involved, and it’s not a position to seek for status either. We are looking for people who genuinely want to help and make the server run smoothly.

The workload is shared and light enough so that it’s possible to be a part of staff within normal playing hours.

PolarTheWise: clarifying permissions

You must follow these rules while playing on the server. Rule breakers will be first warned and then banned. If you are unsure about something, feel free to ask from our moderators. Please use common sense!

Griefing
Modifying other people's builds without a permission is called griefing and it's strictly prohibited here. This includes following actions:

* Breaking or placing blocks.

The permission signs need to be written by the person who owns the build/chests.

* Performance improvements (like Optifine)
* Any purely aesthetic modifications
* Minimaps (without underground)
* Inventory sorters and shortcuts
* Build aids like Litematica

Disallowed mods
* Mods that allows you to fly, jump higher, run faster or move through blocks etc.
Other rules
# Killing players outside PVP arenas is not allowed. This includes luring or teleporting players into danger.
# Traps that are designed to collect people's loot into private chests are not allowed.
# Do not build lag machines or chunk loaders.
# Do not build anything that is violent or explicit. This includes references to genocides, terrorism or wars.
# Bypassing the AFK check with macros or similar is not allowed.

This guide helps moderators to do their job.

As a mod, you are responsible for making sure the server rules are followed. You are also expected to guide new players and be helpful and friendly in general. And always, please assume good faith. Most people want to be nice.

Checking grief alerts
If you want to hide yourself before checking, do
/vanish on
and take your armor off. That makes you invisible and allows flying. Use
/vanish off
to disable it.

When you see an unclear alert use
/co teleport <x> <y> <z>
to teleport there. Then use
/co inspect
to check it (left click tells about the block you're looking at and right-click tells about the block next to it or container transactions).

/tpo <player>
can be also used for teleport.

Advanced lookup & rollbacks
You can also view the logs using
/co lookup <params>

{| class="wikitable"
The rollback command is
/co rollback <params>
. The parameters are same as above.

Other useful tools
Invsee
Stolen items can be removed or checked with
/invsee <player>
or
/endersee <player>
(enderchest). If a rollback is already done, those items can be removed with
/disposal
.

Interrogation room
If someone doesn't answer when you ask about grief, you can use
/jail <player> <jail>
to prevent them for playing before they answer. Always follow the player to the interrogation room, do not leave them alone.

After they answer you should use
/jail <player>
to remove them from the room. Never leave people in the interrogation room even if you ban them. The interrogation room must be always empty when moderators are not online.

Dealing with rule breakers
For minor infractions, talk to the player and make sure they understand the rules. Use
/note <player> <reason>
to record what happened.

If the player is not online, do the rollbacks and give a warning with
/warn <player> <reason>
(
/warnings <player>
can be used to see them).

If the player continues rule breaking or does major grief, you can use
/ban <player> <reason>
to ban them.

Tempbans
/tempban <player> <reason>
can be used when a permban is not warranted (eg. minor but repeated issues) but the player is not trusted to follow the rules without some consequences.

Reasons for a permanent ban
* The player has no intention of following the rules (either they say so or repeatedly ignore warnings)
* Mass griefing and stealing
* Lavacasts
* Malicious spamming
* Intentional offensive language (slurs etc)
* Failure to take responsibility for their actions
* Harassing other players in a creepy or dangerous way

Reasons for a temporary ban
* The player probably didn't read the rules and is likely to learn with a short timeout
* The grief is small and probably not malicious but annoying and repeated
* A regular trusted player causes trouble in a way that normally might be grounds for a permanent ban, and is genuinely sorry

Ban evaders
You can use
/alts <player>
to check if players are logged from a same IP. Then you can see if someone is ban evading that way. If that continues, use
/banip <player> <reason>
to ban all players from that address.

When banning someone for ban evasion, always put
Ban evasion of <player>
as the reason. The reason of IP bans must always be
Ban evasion
.

Building trust
Generally we let people play if we can trust them and they take responsibility for their actions. This is judged by the moderators, within the team if needed.

Chat moderation policy
* Racial slurs, praising genocide etc. always warrant a permban
* NSFW: Not tolerated
* Cursing at the game is ok (if not excessive), cursing at other players should be moderated
* Don’t let casual sexism or prejudices against minorities slide. ”Not cool” is often a good phrase to use to make a point.
* Spamming can be the same stuff over and over or repetitive images or random stuff ingame from discord
* If a request to stop the bad behavior in chat is not heeded, use
/mute
ingame or a timeout on discord. Short times to simply stop the player, longer times for bigger offences.

Checking the alert list
The following symbols are used to mark alerts on Discord. Moderators should regularly check and mark the list to avoid backlog piling up.

* ✅ Checked and complete. No need to scroll up any further. Use when everything above has been cleared.
* ❗ Use when something is clearly against the rules but you can’t fix ingame right now.
* ❓ Use when something is probably against the rules but you can’t check ingame right now.
* 🔄 Use when rollback has been done, warnings/bans given and issue solved.
* ☑️ May be used on something that has been confirmed no problem but all issues above have not been solved.

To set certain locations (like public chests) to ignored:
/griefalert ignore x y z

Other instructions
* Alerts don't always show when people put items back so never moderate grief from Discord.
* It's recommended to use vanish while checking any grief. It keeps you safe and doesn't disturb people.
* Always include the reason while banning someone!’
* Player reports (
/report
) are sent to discord, but should also be closed ingame with
/reports list
(to see them) and
/reports close
(to resolve).

Moderation examples
* A griefer steals diamonds from someone's chest.
<Moderator> Hey Griefer, have you read the rules? You stole diamonds from someone's chest.
* The griefer doesn't answer.
<Moderator> Griefer? Did you see my question? You can't steal here.
* The griefer doesn't answer. The moderator teleports them to the interrogation room.
<Moderator> Could you answer to my question? Stealing is not allowed.
<Griefer> Sorry, I don't know the rules.
<Moderator> Please use /rules to read them. We don't allow stealing here.
<Griefer> I'm sorry. I'll not steal again.
<Moderator> Good :)
<Moderator> Can you return the diamonds?
<Griefer> Ok
* The moderator lets the griefer out from the interrogation room. The griefer returns the diamonds.
<Moderator> Thanks
* The moderator makes a note about the griefer.

* A griefer is making a lavacast over spawn.
<Moderator> Hey Griefer! Have you read the rules? This is not an anarchy server.
<Griefer> Fuck you. I want to grief.
<Moderator> You have come to the wrong server then. Bye!
Griefer was hit with the banhammer! (Grief: Making a lavacast.)
How mods operate
* Keep an eye on what’s happening when you’re online, take action in chat if the somethings seems to get out of line
* Follow the alerts on discord and ingame. Discord alerts are not 100% reliable, always double check ingame what’s going on.
* Assume good intentions until there’s proof of malicious intent.
* Never use mod tools for personal gain or against other players for fun. Be responsible, players rely on you and look up to you.
* Keep the discussion about moderating decisions in the moderator discussion channel on discord.
* Moderate in public chat when possible, so other mods can see what is happening.
* Mods are expected to be online often, but not all the time. We all have lives. For more than 5 days’ absence please let the team know.
Welcoming new members

* Mass griefing and stealing
* Lavacasts
* Malicious spamming

* NSFW: Not tolerated, warn -> mute
* Cursing at the game is ok (if not excessive), cursing at other players should be moderated
* Don’t let casual sexism or prejudices against minorities slide. ”Not cool” is often a good phrase to use to make a point.

* Player reports (
/report
) are sent to discord, but should also be closed ingame with
/reports list
(to see them) and
/reports close
(to resolve).

Moderation examples
* A griefer steals diamonds from someone's chest.
<Moderator> Hey Griefer, have you read the rules? You stole diamonds from someone's chest.
* The griefer doesn't answer.

Staff Positions
Management
There are three different management positions. They can technically do anything in the server.
* Admins are responsible for the technical side of the server and supervise the developers.
Moderators enforce the rules. They can see grief alerts, repair grief and ban people. New moderators are called junior moderators.
* Enough playtime on the server:
** 20 hours for developers.
** 200 hours for moderators.
** 600 hours for admins and overseers.
* Age 16+ (13+ for developers).
* Being a friendly, responsible and helpful person who wants to help the server.
* Social and technical skills.
Note that being part of the staff is volunteer work. There is no money or extra perks involved, and it’s not a position to seek for status either. We are looking for people who genuinely want to help and make the server run smoothly.

You must follow these rules while playing on the server. Rule breakers will be permanently banned. If you are unsure about something, feel free to ask from moderators. Please use common sense!

Griefing
Modifying other people's builds without a permission is called griefing and it's strictly prohibited here. This includes following actions:

* Breaking or placing blocks.

For example, you can allow your friend (Steve) to build with you by writing following into a sign: Steve has perms to modify my builds.

Temporary permissions can be also given in chat. They will expire in 24 hours. You can also give permissions in the wiki and forum.

Also, if two players are logged in from same IP, they have full perms for each other's stuff.

Chat rules
These rules apply to chat and signs.

* Performance improvements (like Optifine)
* Any purely aesthetic modifications
* Minimaps (without underground)
* Inventory sorters and shortcuts
* Build aids like Litematica

Disallowed mods
* Mods that allows you to fly, jump higher, run faster or move through blocks etc.
* Fastbreak/fastplace
* X-ray
* Invincibility

Disallowed mods that we can't really moderate
* Fullbright

The commonly used interpretation of the rules is this:

A settlement that is on a terraformed area or marked with signs or walls is fully owned by the person who started it. That person decides who can build in the settlement and can modify all the builds (as long as he/she doesn't steal people's items). The settlement owner can also remove builds, if they decide the build doesn’t fit in the town. The owner should inform the player in advance if possible.

In a settlement that is just a group of builds near each other in natural terrain, every build is owned by their builders. No one owns that kind of settlement.

This guide helps moderators to do their job.

As a mod, you are responsible for making sure the server rules are followed. You are also expected to guide new players and be helpful and friendly in general. And always, please assume good faith. Most people want to be nice.

Checking grief alerts
If you want to hide yourself before checking, do
/vanish
. That makes you invisible and allows flying.

When you see an unclear alert use
/co teleport <x> <y> <z>
to teleport there. Then use
/co inspect
to check it (left click tells about the block you're looking at and right-click tells about the block next to it or container transactions). Finally, use
/co-back
to return.

/tpo <player>
can be also used for teleport.

Advanced lookup & rollbacks
You can also view the logs using
/co lookup <params>

{| class="wikitable"
The rollback command is
/co rollback <params>
. The parameters are same as above.

Other useful tools
Invsee
Stolen items can be removed or checked with
/invsee <player>
or
/endersee <player>
(enderchest). If a rollback is already done, those items can be removed with
/disposal
.

Interrogation room
If someone doesn't answer when you ask about grief, you can use
/jail <player> <jail>
to prevent them for playing before they answer.

After they answer you can use
/jail <player>
to unjail.

Dealing with rules breakers
For minor infractions, talk to the player and make sure they understand the rules. Use
/note <player> <reason>
to record what happened.

If the player is not online, do the rollbacks and give a warning with
/warn <player> <reason>
(
/warnings <player>
can be used to see them).

If the player continues rule breaking or does major grief, you can use
/ban <player> <reason>
to ban them.

Tempbans
/tempban <player> <reason>
can be used when a permban is not warranted (eg. minor but repeated issues) but the player is not trusted to follow the rules without some consequences.

Ban evaders
You can use
/alts <player>
to check if players are logged from a same IP. Then you can see if someone is ban evading that way. If that continues, use
/banip <player> <reason>
to ban all players from that address.

* Welcome and guide new members, be available for questions and encourage everyone to read the rules. Less work later if everyone gets a rule reminder when they first join.
* Always keep an eye on new players for a while to make sure they’ve come to play and not cause problems

Mod high
Hands-on teaching with a community overseer or a senior mod. After a JrMod has learned the commands and dealt with enough real life situations to be confident, they will be promoted to full moderator.
See also :File:The mod quest.png

Understand and learn the mod tools
* Learn /co inspect & /co lookup
* Read and understand the grief logs & alerts, how to spot issues and how to mark alerts handled
* Mod teleports: /tpo and /co teleport for easy access to problems, /co-back to return
* Sneaky inspections: /invsee, /endersee, /vanish
* Fixing grief: /co rollback & /co restore. When to use action, keep radius short, include playername. Global rollbacks. Also /co undo
* What to do with duplicated loot: /disposal or /trash
* How to use /jail, /warn, /note, /ban and /tempban

Using the alert list symbols
* ✅ checked, no problem
* ❓ seen, may be a problem, must be investigated
* ❗ seen, clearly a problem, needs rollback
* 🔄 rolled back, issue taken care of
* ☑️ checked, no problem but unresolved issues above (this symbol is blue on discord)

How to deal with different situations
* Always try talking first, unless clearly an attack/raid
* Require a confirmation of understanding the rules on chat, and a promise to follow the rules
* When to give warnings
* When to use jail
* When to ban

Mod college
Deeper learning with a community overseer or a senior mod.

* Advanced lookup and rollback: different actions (block, container, kill, +, -), different blocks, include, exclude
* When to suspect cheating or trying to harm the server
* Understand different mods and how they can be problematic
* Understand tps and lag, what moderators can do about it
* Understand some server mechanics eg. why duping doesn’t work, what paper is
* Cracked accounts and why they’re not allowed

This guide helps moderators to do their job.
As a mod, you are responsible for making sure the server rules are followed. You are also expected to guide new players and be helpful and friendly in general. And always, please assume good faith. Most people want to be nice.

Checking grief alerts
If you want to hide yourself before checking, do
/vanish
. That makes you invisible and allows flying.

When you see an unclear alert use
/co teleport <x> <y> <z>
to teleport there. Then use
/co inspect
to check it (left click tells about the block you're looking at and right-click tells about the block next to it or container transactions). Finally, use
/co-back
to return.

/tpo <player>
can be also used for teleport.

Advanced lookup & rollbacks
You can also view the logs using
/co lookup <params>

{| class="wikitable"

Other useful tools
Invsee
Stolen items can be removed or checked with
/invsee <player>
or
/endersee <player>
(enderchest). If a rollback is already done, those items can be removed with
/disposal
.

Interrogation room
If someone doesn't answer when you ask about grief, you can use
/jail <player> <jail>
to prevent them for playing before they answer.

After they answer you can use
/jail <player>
to unjail.

Punishing rule breakers
For minor infractions, you can use
/warn <player> <reason>
(
/warnings <player>
can be used to see them).

If the player continues rule breaking or does major grief, you can use
/ban <player> <reason>
to ban them.

Ban evaders
You can use
/alts <player>
to check if players are logged from a same IP. Then you can see if someone is ban evading that way. If that continues, use
/banip <player> <reason>
to ban all players from that address.
Checking the alert list
The following symbols are used to mark alerts on discord. Moderators should regularly check and mark the list to avoid backlog piling up.

✅ Checked and complete. No need to scroll up any further. Use when everything above has been cleared.

❗ Use when something is clearly against the rules but you can’t fix ingame right now.

❓ Use when something is probably against the rules but you can’t check ingame right now.

🔄 Use when rollback has been done, warnings/bans given and issue solved.

☑️ May be used on something that has been confirmed no problem but all issues above have not been solved.

Other useful tools
Invsee
Stolen items can be removed or checked with
/invsee <player>
or
/endersee <player>
(enderchest). If a rollback is already done, those items can be removed with
/disposal
.

Interrogation room
If someone doesn't answer when you ask about grief, you can use
/jail <player> <jail>
to prevent them for playing before they answer.

After they answer you can use
/jail <player>
to unjail.

Punishing rule breakers
For minor infractions, you can use
/warn <player> <reason>
(
/warnings <player>
can be used to see them).

If the player continues rule breaking or does major grief, you can use
/ban <player> <reason>
to ban them.

Ban evaders
You can use
/alts <player>
to check if players are logged from a same IP. Then you can see if someone is ban evading that way. If that continues, use
/banip <player> <reason>
to ban all players from that address.
Checking the alert list
The following symbols are used to mark alerts on discord. Moderators should regularly check and mark the list to avoid backlog piling up.

✅ Checked and complete. No need to scroll up any further. Use when everything above has been cleared.

❗ Use when something is clearly against the rules but you can’t fix ingame right now.

❓ Use when something is probably against the rules but you can’t check ingame right now.

🔄 Use when rollback has been done, warnings/bans given and issue solved.

☑️ May be used on something that has been confirmed no problem but all issues above have not been solved.
