Multiple people have suggested that we give a per-player option to toggle phantom spawning. I've denied this before but let's vote about it.

My opinion: Toggling the phantoms would probably remove the need to sleep for more played people. That would be bad for especially new players.

I disagree about the need to sleep, I sleep because the other mobs are annoying too.
